1.     This program requires pet retailers to have an attending licensed veterinarian responsible for:

 

           a)  Examining the health of each puppy in the pet retailer’s facility;

           b)  Approving the adequate size and construction materials of all puppy pens to ensure a safe

                 living environment for each puppy;

            c)  Approving the protocols for the cleaning and sanitization of each puppy’s pen one or more

                   daily;

           d)  Approving the protocols to ensure that each puppy has access to clean drinking water at all times;

           e)  Approving the nutritional feeding program utilizing only premium dog foods at the scheduled times

                 and intervals as directed by the licensed attending veterinarian.

           f)  Approving the protocols for daily socialization and exercise programs designed to improve each

                 puppy’s quality of life;

           g)  Approving the types of toys the puppies should play with daily;

           h)  Establishing an inoculation and de-worming programs designed to optimize the healthcare of each

                  puppy that must be implemented by the pet retailer.

2.     The pet retailer’s facility air must be well ventilated or filtered for the health of the each puppy and to           minimize odors.

 

3.     The pet retailer’s facility has adequate lighting so that each puppy can be easily observed.

 

4.     The pet retailer must require customers to sanitize their hands before handling each puppy.

 

5.     The pet retailer implements all veterinary protocols established by the attending licensed veterinarian.

 

6.     The pet retailer maintains accurate and up-to-date health records for each puppy.

 

7.     The pet retailer maintains records including the date, name, and address of the person or breeder from

         whom each puppy was acquired; and if known, the puppy’s date of birth, breed status or type, color,           microchip information or identification and name and registration number of the puppy’s sire and

         dam should be included.

 

8.     The pet retailer maintains records with the date, name, and address of the person adopting or buying

         each puppy.

 

9.     Pet retailers’ and their employees must receive a minimum of two continuing education credit hours of

         pet care training annually. These credit hours must be approved by the American Canine Association.

 

10.   The pet retailer’s compliance to all of these requirements is documented during inspections by an

         independent inspector designated by the American Canine Association, Inc.
